The British royal family, headed by Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, welcomed President Tony Tan Keng Yam and his wife, Mary, on their state visit to the United Kingdom that commenced on October 21, 2014. Also in attendance at the official ceremonial welcome at Horse Guards Parade were the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, who had paid a courtesy call to the President and Mrs. Keng at London’s Royal Garden Hotel. The presence of the Duchess of Cambridge marked the first time she has appeared in an official public function since the announcement that she is expecting her second child. Later in the evening, the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh hosted a glittering banquet at Buckingham Palace and were joined by the Duke of York, and the Earl and Countess of Wessex, among others.
