King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima of the Netherlands met in private with family members and friends of those who were killed on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17. The couple personally expressed their condolences in Utrecht on July 21, 201 and were accompanied by Dutch prime minister Mark Rutte. Of the numerous nationalities on board the flight, 193 were Dutch nationals. The king also gave a televised address to the nation in which he spoke of “this terrible tragedy (that) has left a deep wound in our society. King Willem-Alexander went on to state that “the scar will be visible and tangible for years to come.” He also stated that he and his wife were “deeply touched by the distressing personal stories of people who lost loved ones … people whose lives are shattered … Their grief, powerlessness and desperation cuts to our souls.” Photos by Getty Images.
