Queen Elizabeth II and members of the British royal family attended Christmas service at the church of St. Mary Magdalene at Sandringham, the queen’s estate in Norfolk. Among the family members who attended the service were the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, the Duke of York, Princess Beatrice and Eugenie of York, the Princess Royal, the Earl and Countess of Wessex and Lady Louise Windsor. The queen’s great-grandson, Prince George of Cambridge, did not make an appearance at the church service, but at the queen’s annual Christmas message, scenes from the prince’s christening were shown. Prince Albert and Princess Charlene of Monaco were in festive spirits when they celebrated Christmas on December 18, 2013 with the children of Monaco who came to visit the palace. For this year’s event, Princess Charlene wore a floor-length red tartan skirt and black blouse. King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia presided over the 2013 Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden on December 10th. Queen Silvia wore a vivid red gown and one of her favorite tiaras, the Nine Prong Tiara, made for Queen Sofia of Sweden (1836-1913), consort of King Oscar II. Absent this year were Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine, but Prince Daniel (Crown Princess Victoria’s husband), and Prince Carl Philip (son of the King and Queen) were able to attend the ceremony. King Carl XVI Gustaf awarded the Nobel laureates their prize: the Nobel diploma, a document and medal confirming the prize amount of 8 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.2 million U.S. dollars). Awards were given in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Economic Sciences. A Nobel gala banquet held at Stockholm city hall took place following the formal awards ceremony.
