THE KING AND QUEEN OF SWEDEN PRESIDE OVER THE 2013 NOBEL PRIZE CEREMONY

King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and Queen Silvia presided over the 2013 Nobel Prize Ceremony in Stockholm, Sweden on December 10th.  Queen Silvia wore a vivid red gown and one of her favorite tiaras, the Nine Prong Tiara, made for Queen Sofia of Sweden (1836-1913), consort of King Oscar II.  Absent this year were Crown Princess Victoria and Princess Madeleine, but Prince Daniel (Crown Princess Victoria’s husband), and Prince Carl Philip (son of the King and Queen)  were able to attend the ceremony.  King Carl XVI Gustaf awarded the Nobel laureates their prize: the Nobel diploma, a document and medal confirming the prize amount of 8 million Swedish kronor (approximately 1.2 million U.S. dollars).  Awards were given in Medicine, Physics, Chemistry, Literature and Economic Sciences.  A Nobel gala banquet held at Stockholm city hall took place following the formal awards ceremony.  The ceremony is held annually on December 10th, the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.  Photos by Getty Images.
