KING PHILIPPE AND QUEEN MATHILDE IN MECHELEN, BELGIUM

Belgium’s King Philippe and Queen Mathilde were in Mechelen Belgium on September 1, 2013 where they attended the city’s Hanswijck’s Calvade.  Every twenty-five years, the cavalcade is held featuring floats and participants dressed in costumes.  The colorful spectacle takes place in the city’s historic center.  The procession is dominated by religious and historic themes:  The Creation, The Call of Abraham, The Call of Moses, The Call of Mary, The Birth of Jesus, The Vocation of Jesus, Jesus Returns to His Father, The Resurrection of Jesus, The Spread of the Gospel in Our Lands, Roots of the Marian Devotion, The Flourishing of the Burgundian Court, The Habsburgs, The Renaissance of Marian Devotion, and Marian Devotion Today.  Photos by Getty Images.
