Prince Johan Friso, brother of King Willem-Alexander of the Netherlands, died on August 12, 2013, at the age of 44.  An official statement was issued stating that, “Prince Friso has died of complications related to the hypoxic brain injury, which he suffered as the result of his skiing accident in Lech, Austria on 17 February 2012.”  The prince had recently been moved back to the Netherlands from London.  His wife, Princess Mabel, had reportedly spent her 45th birthday by his bedside the day before he died.  Prince Friso was the second son of Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands and her husband, Prince Claus.  In April this year, Beatrix had abdicated the throne after a reign of 33 years.  In 2004 Prince Friso married Mabel Wisse Smit.  Besides his widow, Prince Friso is survived by the couple’s two daughters, Countess Luanna (8) and Countess Zaria (7).  Photos by Getty Images.
