Willem-Alexander and Maxima, the new king and queen of the Netherlands, attended the annual Apples of Orange Ceremony which was held at the Royal Palace of Amsterdam. The event took place on May 17, 2013, which happened to be Queen Maxima’s 42nd birthday. The king and queen were accompanied to the event by Princess Beatrix, the king’s mother, who abdicated on April 30th. The awards are given to successful initiatives and individuals that help promote harmony among Dutch citizens.
