QUEEN ELIZABETH II AT THE STATE OPENING OF PARLIAMENT

Amidst pomp and splendor, Queen Elizabeth II attended the state opening of parliament on May 8, 2013.  The Queen, accompanied by Prince Philip rode in a horse-drawn carriage.  Also in attendance this year was the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall.  It was the first time Prince Charles attended the State Opening of Parliament since 1996.  The Prince of Wales will be taking a more active public role in assisting the eighty-seven-year old Queen and deputizing for her.   The Queen will be handing more duties to the Prince of Wales in the near future.  In November, Prince Charles will be representing his mother at the next Commonwealth heads of government meeting which will take place in Sri Lanka.  Photos by Getty Images.
