The new monarchs of the Netherlands, King Willem-Alexander and his wife, Queen Maxima, attended the Freedom Concert on May 5, 2013 in Amsterdam.  They were accompanied by the king’s mother, Princess Beatrix, who abdicated the throne on April 30th.  In their first official engagement as monarchs, King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima commemorated the war dead on May 4, 2013 by presiding over the nation’s Day of Remembrance by attending a service at Nieuwe Kerk and then laying a wreath at Amsterdam’s Dam Square in honor of those who were killed in World War II.  Photos by Getty Images.
