Members of the Spanish royal family met with recipients of the Cervantes Awards. The Spanish Ministry of Culture awards the prestigious prizes annually in recognition of the achievements and enriching contributions of Spanish language writers. Recipients from the past have included such famous authors as the Nobel Laureates Mario Vargas Llosa and Octavio Paz Lozano. King Juan Carlos I and Queen Sofia received at an audience, on April 21, 2013, Jose Manuel Caballero Bonald, recipient of the 2012 Cervantes Prize. On April 22nd, Prince Felipe and his wife, Princess Letizia, presided over a lunch in the Royal Palace of Madrid in celebration of the Cervantes Awards. The prince and princess, accompanied by the Spanish prime minister, Mariano Rajoy, were also at Alcala de Henares University in Madrid where they attended the awards ceremony.
