With the papacy (2005-2013) of Pope Benedict XVI at a close, it’s a fitting time to look back at the pope and other royals. Here are some photographs of his meetings through the years as pontiff with members of various royal families. Pope Benedict’s last official audience with a reigning royal took place when Prince Albert II of Monaco, accompanied by his wife, Princess Charlene, visited the Vatican earlier this year. Prince Harry visited the African nation of Lesotho to help promote the charity, Sentebale, which was founded in 2006 by Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho. The charity’s goal is to help Lesotho’s vulnerable children, whose lives have been impacted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic and poverty. The two princes founded the charity in honor of their late mothers. On February 27, 2013, Prince Harry, accompanied by Prince Seeiso, visited the Kananelo Center for the Deaf Photos where Harry tried to learn some sign language. He gamely put on an apron with a teddy-bear print and at the school’s kitchen, tried his hand at making ‘fat cakes.’ He also learned some dance moves to the delight of those watching Harry. The Dutch royal family posed for photographers on February 18, 2013 at Lech, Austria where they are on their winter skiing holiday. Present at the photo session were Queen Beatrix, her son and heir, Crown Prince Willem-Alexander, his wife, Princess Maxima, and their three daughters, the Princesses Amalia, Alexia, and Ariane. The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall recently visited Borough Market in London, the city’s famous gourmet market, to help celebrate the market’s existence for a thousand years. The couple rang the market bell to commemorate the restoration of Borough Market. The well-known market sells high quality food and produce. Prince Charles was presented with leg of a boar while the Duchess of Cornwall was presented with a bouquet of roses and a large chocolate heart with the message ‘love from Borough Market.’ Charles and Camilla were also recently at the Savoy Hotel in London for a reception for beneficiaries and supporters of the Prince’s Trust Invest In Futures initiative which has raised millions of pounds in support of disadvantaged young people.
