It’s official: the Duchess of Cambridge is pregnant with her first child. In a statement issued on December 3, 2012, it was announced that “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Cambridge is expecting a baby.” The official announcement was made earlier than planned due to the fact that Catherine was rushed to King Edward VII hospital in London because she had been suffering from Hyperemesis gravidarum, an acute form of morning sickness. The duchess is expected to spend several days in the hospital. The Queen was told of the news earlier in the day. Messages of congratulations came pouring in including one from the prime minister, David Cameron, who said he was “delighted” to hear the news, and another, from the Archbishop of Canterbury, who said that “the whole nation will want to join in celebrating this wonderful news.” William and Catherine’s child will be the Queen’s third great-grandchild and will be third in line to the throne when he or she is born. Already, bets are being taken as to the name that will be given to the baby. Currently, Elizabeth is a favorite at 8/1 should the baby be a girl.
