QUEEN ELIZABETH’S VISIT TO NORTHERN IRELAND: DAY TWO

An historic event took place on the second day of Queen Elizabeth II’s visit to Northern Ireland when she shook hands with Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland Martin McGuinness who was an IRA commander.  The IRA had been behind the assassination of Lord Louis Mountbatten in 1979  when they planted a bomb in his yacht.  The historic handshake took place on June 27, 2012 in Belfast, Northern Ireland at the Lyric Theatre, watched by First Minister Peter Robinson.   The Queen was accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh.  Photos by Getty Images.
