QUEEN ELIZABETH II & THE DUKE OF EDINBURGH ATTEND MAUNDY THURSDAY SERVICE AT YORK MINSTER

Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, accompanied by their granddaughter, Princess Beatrice of York, attended Maundy Thursday Service at York Minster on April 5, 2012.   Maundy Thursday, or Holy Thursday, marks the first of three days celebrating Easter.  The monarch distributes money in red purses and Maundy coins in white purses, both purses having been carried by Yeomen of the Guards on alms trays on their heads.  The queen, duke and princess posed on the steps of York Minster along with the Archbishop of York, John Sentamu.   Photos by Getty Images.
