IN MADRID KING JUAN CARLOS & QUEEN SOFIA BID POPE BENEDICT XVI FAREWELL AT THE END OF WORLD YOUTH DAY

Pope Benedict XVI has ended his four-day visit to Madrid and celebration of World Youth Day with a Mass on August 21, 2011 before 1.5 million young people at the Cuatro Vientos airfield.  Also in attendance were King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain.  The Pope urged the faithful to “…not keep Christ to yourselves!  Share with others the joy of your faith.”   It was also announced that the next World Youth Day will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in 2013.   An official farewell ceremony was then held at Madrid’s Barajas Airport.  King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia officially bid Pope Benedict farewell at the airport.  In his closing remarks, said before the King and Queen and other officials, the Pope said that “Spain is a great nation whose soundly open, pluralistic and respectful society is capable of moving forward without surrendering its profoundly religious and Catholic soul.”
