Queen Elizabeth II’s horse, Carlton House, was a favorite to win The Derby this year at Espsom Downs. Carlton House lost a shoe and took third place after Treasure Beach and the winner, Pour Moi. Had her horse won the race, the Queen would have been the first reigning monarch to have a Derby winner since King Edward VII in 1909. Numerous members of the Royal Family attended the event, including the Queen, Prince Philip, the Earl and Countess of Wessex, Prince Harry, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. Catherine looked fashionable in a chiffon dress and jacket. In a departure from her usual style of wearing her hair loose, Catherine wore it up this time. The Queen’s disappointment in not winning the race was evident, but then who can blame her, as her horse was favored to win. It’s said that because Carlton House did not win, the bookies save some 20 million pounds.
